Circumcision is a Surgical Procedure where the prepuce or foreskin of the penis is surgically removed, exposing the Glans or head of the Penis.

Procedure for circumcision

There are different methods of circumcision, with either the use of a local or general anaesthetic.

The plastibell procedure involves numbing the area with a local anaesthetic cream or injection. A bell-shaped instrument is then inserted under the foreskin to separate it from the penis. Using a scalpel, the foreskin is then removed.

In boys and adults, a technique called Freehand circumcision is used, where the excess foreskin is removed surgically then the edges are joined together with dissolvable stitches. There is no discomfort to the patient as a local anaesthetic is used.

After the operation

Your doctor will dress the penis with a wrap that will be left there for 24 hours. It is important to keep the area clean, and to avoid lifting heavy objects, this will allow the wound to heal usually within two weeks. Antibiotics are usually prescribed for the first week after the procedure, and pain killers may also be needed, usually for 2 to 3 days.

Bruising and swelling of the penis is common, however, it usually subsides within 2 weeks.
